While only a minority of jails offer any form of medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) – methadone, buprenorphine, naltrexone — many are exploring the feasibility of offering at least some form of MOUD given the number of individuals who are incarcerated who have OUD and are risk of overdose upon re-entry to the community. This webinar will highlight the methadone treatment program of the Maricopa County, AZ jail. Staff from the Maricopa County jail will describe how the jail received approval from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to operate an opioid treatment program – a state and federally regulated facility that provides methadone for OUD.  The logistics of how patients are identified, how medication is administered, and how clinical and custody staff interact will be covered in this presentation.
